On June 20, the 2026 Shanghai Learning Events for Malaysia Global Excellence in Mathematics kicked off at the Mingyuan Hall of UNESCO-TEC.
Professor HU Guoyong, Deputy Director of UNESCO-TEC; Professor XIAO Shengxiong, Director of the International Office of Shanghai Normal University; and Associate Professor Mas Sahidayana Binti Mohktar, Director of the National STEM Centre of Malaysia, delivered remarks at the opening ceremony. The event was attended by 21 Malaysian participants, including STEM researchers, education administrators, school principals, and mathematics teachers, together with members of the UNESCO-TEC project team. Professor HUANG Xingfeng chaired the ceremony.
During the opening session, Professor HU Guoyong introduced the mission, core functions, and key initiatives of UNESCO-TEC. Professor XIAO Shengxiong highlighted Shanghai Normal University’s strengths in international cooperation and expressed expectations for future collaboration between China and Malaysia in faculty and student exchanges, joint research, and curriculum development. Associate Professor Mas Sahidayana Binti Mohktar noted that the Learning Events provide a valuable platform for Malaysian educators to better understand Shanghai’s educational practices and expressed her hope for establishing long-term cooperation and regular exchange mechanisms between the two sides. Professor HUANG Xingfeng also shared his vision for strengthening educational collaboration and promoting reciprocal exchanges among educators from both countries. Following the ceremony, all participants gathered for a group photograph.
After the opening ceremony, the Learning Events entered the thematic learning stage. Professor HUANG Xingfeng facilitated a seminar on Shanghai education policies, while Professor HU Guoyong delivered a presentation on related topics. Chinese and Malaysian educators engaged in discussions on educational governance, mathematics teacher development, and assessment reform.
In In the afternoon, participants attended a workshop on lower secondary mathematics assessment. Mr. LIN Xumai from Shanghai Experimental School introduced representative mathematics items from the High School Entrance Examination (Zhongkao) and guided participants through group discussions and collaborative problem-solving activities. The Malaysian participants actively exchanged ideas and experiences, creating a dynamic learning atmosphere.
The 2026 Shanghai Learning Events for Malaysia Global Excellence in Mathematics focuses on issues of common interest in mathematics education development in China and Malaysia. Through seminars, workshops, classroom observations, and face-to-face discussions, the program aims to facilitate the sharing of educational experiences and strengthen professional dialogue between educators from both countries. The Learning Events will continue in the coming days, providing opportunities for participants to gain deeper insights into Shanghai’s mathematics education practices and further promoting educational cooperation and mutual learning between China and Malaysia.
