In an era shaped by climate change, growing social inequalities, and rapid technological transformation, education is being entrusted with new responsibilities. Beyond helping learners acquire knowledge, education is increasingly expected to foster understanding of the world, empathy for others, and reflection on the future of humanity.Thus, Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has emerged as a key issue in global education.
What Is Education for Sustainable Development?
ESD refers to an approach that helps people learn how to live and develop in a world of limited resources and increasing complexity, enabling them to make more responsible choices in real-life contexts. ESD empowers people with the knowledge, skills, values, attitudes and behaviors to live in a way that is good for the environment, economy, and society.[]It equips people of all ages with the knowledge, skills, values, and ability to tackle issues such as climate change, biodiversity loss, overuse of resources, and inequality that impact the well-being of people and the planet. [1]
Importantly, ESD is not a standalone subject. Rather, it represents a cross-cutting and interdisciplinary educational orientation that can be integrated across subjects, learning settings, and stages of education.
The Evolution of Education for Sustainable Development
In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development introduced the concept of “sustainable development” in its report Our Common Future, defining it as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. [2]As this concept gained wider acceptance, growing attention was paid to the role of education in achieving sustainable development.
The international community gradually recognized that sustainable development cannot be realized through policies and technological solutions alone. Education must play a more fundamental and long-term role. In this context, UNESCO brought together previously fragmented efforts in environmental education and development education, formally advancing the concept of ESD as an integrated framework.
Education for Sustainable Development toward 2030
Within the United Nations 2030 Agenda, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out a global framework for action. Among them, SDG 4 focuses on education, emphasizing the need to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Target 4.7 explicitly identifies Education for Sustainable Development as a key component in achieving this goal, while also recognizing its importance as a catalyst for progress across the other 16 SDGs.
The framework commonly referred to as Education for Sustainable Development: Towards Achieving the SDGs underscores the need to rethink the purpose and value of education. It calls on education systems at all levels to pay greater attention to the relationships between humanity and nature, and between individuals and society. Through learning, ESD seeks to foster future-oriented responsibility and the capacity for action, thereby supporting the achievement of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals.[3]
At the level of implementation, ESD toward 2030 outlines several priority areas for action, including policy support,learning environments, capacity building for educators, youth participation, and promoting action at the local community. Together, these efforts share a common aim: to ensure that sustainable development is not merely an abstract principle articulated in policies, but a lived reality embedded in everyday learning and life through education.
