On May 6, the 2026 Shanghai Learning Events for Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad Teachers kicked off at the Shicheng Lecture Hall of UNESCO-TEC.
The following Chinese and Brazilian representatives delivered remarks respectively: Professor Zhang Minxuan, UNESCO-TEC Director; Professor Jiang Mingjun, Vice President of Shanghai Normal University; Mr. Qin Changwei, Secretary-General of the National Commission of China for UNESCO; Mr. Augusto Pestana, Consul-General of Brazil in Shanghai; Mr. Chen Hao, Deputy Director of the International Exchange Office of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission; Mr. Victor Both Eyng, Senior Coordinator of Primary Education Department of Basic Education Policies and Guidelines from Ministry of Education in Brazil.
At the ceremony, Professor Huang Xingfeng, the lead expert of this China-Brazil project, invited guests from both sides to inaugurate the Global Academy of Teacher Education, Latin American Institute.
Various activities were scheduled for the 2026 Learning Events. Following the opening ceremony, a seminar on Shanghai education policies was held. Professor Hu Guoyong, UNESCO-TEC Deputy Director, delivered a talk and aroused discussion on the related topic among the Chinese and Brazilian audience.
On the afternoon of May 6, participants took part in a cross-cultural Teaching Research Group (TRG) activity, focusing on refining research questions and collaboratively designing lesson plans. The TRG activity consisted of three sessions, introduction, group discussion, and presentation of outcomes, and Brazilian teachers engaged actively.
UNESCO-TEC hosted the 2024 Shanghai Learning Events For Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad Teachers. And this year, the project represents another important collaboration between China and Brazil in mathematics education, marking the ongoing educational exchange mechanisms and the continued consolidation of cooperation between the two countries. In the coming days, Brazilian participants will visit primary and secondary schools across Shanghai for school visits and classroom observations to gain in-depth insights into China’s teaching design and practices in mathematics. These visits are expected to further promote mutual learning and share development knowledge.
