On October 7, 2021, the inauguration ceremony of the UNESCO Teacher Education Centre (TEC) and the inaugural meeting of the TEC Council were held. Following discussions at the Council meeting, Chen Qun was elected Chairman of the first TEC Council and presided over the first meeting of the inaugural TEC Council in his capacity as Chairman.
The Council comprises representatives of UNESCO Member States, representatives from China’s Ministry of Education, representatives from the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and domestic and international education experts. It appointed Zhang Minxuan—former President of Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) and leader of TEC’s preparatory team—as Director of TEC.
In 2021, TEC launched The Tanzanian-Shanghai Mathematics Educator Exchange Program. Starting from 2023, it has dispatched Shanghai-based mathematics teachers and student volunteers to provide voluntary teaching locally every summer vacation, and established the Joint Education Center (JEC-TEC-TIE) in Tanzania.
