Under the auspices of UNESCO, the Centre is dedicated to the field of teacher education and development. It operates within a framework that encompasses four pivotal functions: knowledge production, capacity building, technical support, and information sharing. The Centre aspires to emerge as a preeminent global entity in the realm of teacher education, fulfilling the roles of service provider, standard setter, and research and resource management centre.
Core Functions

Knowledge ProductionUse of well-known experts in basic and teacher education to research and disseminate findings in such areas as development, administration evaluation and innovation in basic and teacher education. -
Capacity BuildingUtilization of multi-level training programmes to build the capacity of basic and teacher education institutions, including provision of research seminars, workshops and training in basic and teacher education for policymakers, teacher trainers, senior head teachers and teachers of member states and UNESCO agencies. -
Information SharingWorking closely with UNESCOs field and regional offices, national committees, Category Ⅰ Institutes, and other Category Ⅱ Institutes of UNESCO, to share advanced theories, experiences, methods and good practices of various nations in teacher policy, in-service training and professional development. -
Technical ServiceLeveraging ICT and experts to provide professional service in basic and teacher education especially for least developed countries in Asia-Pacific, Africa and other regions;
Organization

The Teacher Education Centre under the Auspicies of UNESCO (UNESCO TEC) is an international institution approved by UNESCO, established by the Chinese (Shanghai) government, managed by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and operated by Shanghai Normal University. The center adopts a director responsibility system led by the board of directors. The central council comprehensively supervises the work of the center, and the specific operation is the responsibility of the center director.
