The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a project developed and implemented by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Essentially, it serves as an internationally recognized assessment of mathematics, reading, science, and a range of innovative fields. Administered every three years, it targets representative samples of 15-year-old students from participating countries.

PISA primarily evaluates students’ mastery of subject content and their ability to creatively apply knowledge—including the capacity to use knowledge innovatively in unfamiliar contexts. To ensure cultural and linguistic breadth as well as balance in assessment materials, the OECD implements rigorous quality assurance mechanisms in test design, translation, sampling, and data collection.

PISA is a product of international cooperation. Leading experts from participating countries jointly determine the scope, nature, and background information to be collected for PISA, while governments of participating countries oversee the decision-making process based on shared, policy-driven interests.
